FAQ

 On-Line UPS

This is the topology used by the PCM Vanguard Series, ONL series, ONL-33 Series and new VGD-33 Series. This UPS operates with the inverter as the primary power source supplying the load and therefore there is no transfer time in case of power  failures. This type of "on-line" power eliminates any interruptions in the flow of  electricity. And since if uses more electronic wizardry than offline UPS, it is priced higher. Besides the high price, on-line UPS also has the disadvantage of high running costs and temperature. Since the battery acts as the primary power source to the  system, an on-line UPS battery charger has to be powerful enough to generate enough power to compensate for the battery's power drain. This conversion from AC mains to CD through the inverter results in a 25 to 30 percent of power loss. The heat generated as a consequences of the power lost shortens the life of electrical components and  reduce battery life.

2. Which type of electrical wave from does it produce to power your equipment?

The quality of the electricity delivering from a UPS to your sensitive electronic equipment is the most important factor when purchasing a UPS. If the UPS is not properly designed, it can eventually damage the equipment it was purchased to protect

3. Does this UPS offer enough protection against power line noise?

Noise in power line come from many different sources. The Power coming into your building often already has electrical noise problems. The equipment in your building can also generate noise. The motor running the elevator in your building or the one in your photocopier can be the cause of such a noise. There are two general types of electrical line noise the UPS should protect against: Normal-Mode Noise & Common-Mode Noise. In order to get ride of the data errors, data loss, and erratic computer operation caused by electrical noise on the ground line, a UPS that provides at least 99% (40dB) rejection of Common-Mode Noise.

4. Can this UPS safely stabilize the voltage variances without using battery energy?

Voltage sags (Brownouts) and overvoltages are the most common type of power problem met by users. Voltage regulation is a key part to comprehensive power protection. A UPS with AVR (Auto Voltage Regulator) can compensate for power that is too weak (to boost) and buck down power that is too strong. Without AVR function, a UPS switches battery power during even minor sag or little overvoltage. The frequent use of batteries can greatly reduce the battery life time and leave the batteries undercharge when a full blackout happens. For example, UPS with AVR can handle a correction range of 90V to 150V for 120V equipment (173V to 288V for 230V equipment) without switching to batteries in UPS

 5. Does this UPS provide sufficient surge protection?

A UPS not only provide battery back up but also protect your equipment against dangerous surges or spikes in your city power line. When looking into this aspect, you need to look for the following features.

a. Multi-level suppression circuitry
b. Fire-Prevention Capability
C. Minimum of 10,000 peak current capacity
d. Tel Line / Fax line / Networking / Modem Protection

6. How much battery back up time does this UPS need to have?

When purchasing a UPS, you need to think about how much back up time you need to have for your equipment? Do you need only few minutes to save your files and safely shut down your computer or you need to have long time back up for many hours? You need to consider this aspect when purchasing a UPS. The battery quality is also an important factor to consider how strong your UPS is when a total blackout occurs in General. It is better to select a UPS whose full load rating is at least 125% larger than the load you intend to connect to a UPS.

7. What kind of software does this UPS provide to monitor power status?

when any power problem occurs, the UPS needs to inform you immediately and can quickly recognize the problems before uptime is affected. By meeting such a requirement a good monitoring software is indispensable. Following features are necessary. Unattended workstation and Server shutdown / Automatic reboot/ Application shutdown / Control of outlet receptacle operation / Paging and e-mail notification when power problem occurs / SNMP management for integrated network management, even from a remote location.

8. How do you know your UPS is working properly?

A UPS is like insurance. When you really need it, it must function properly. you need to know how healthy your UPS is all the time. Your UPS need to have at least following key diagnostic tools to make sure it is functioning normally: self-testing and battery testing/ Power status display / Warnings-locally or remotely / historical Power Events or Logs.

9. Has this UPS been certificated by authorized institutions?

Proper Safety certifications are required to make sure your UPS doesn't cause a fire or a shock hazard even when it is used abnormal circumstance. for Ac 1xOV countries,UL 1778 is a must. for AC 2xOV countries, CE is a must. Additional certificates such as TUV, VDE are favourable.
